Rust Item Skin Design

Over the summer I decided to try out my hand in making some custom skins for the hugely popular PC game Rust. It's an open world survival game that allows you to craft items and tools to build and defend your base against other players. Items including clothes and guns that you can purchase custom skins for. The custom skins made my players such as myself are added into the game once a large amount of the community votes for them and the game developers give them the thumbs up.

Since this was my first time dabbling in creating any form of game skins at all, it was fortunate that a clever friend of mine was able to create a custom server plugin that allowed us to upload our own skins from the workshop (without the whole community and the devs approval) onto his particular server. So I decided to make some skins in theme with my online name (Pickled Tiger, don't ask, long story).

My first attempt at a skin was with my favourite weapon in the game. The Thompson SMG. What I first found was that there was VERY few tutorials online of how to create Rust skins other than a few people suggesting to simple overlay 1 big texture as the diffuse map (how ugly). Eventually with the help of another of my creative online friends trying their hand at making Rust skins, i figured out how exactly changing the diffuse map altered the 3D model and hence dreamed up this tiger themed Thompson skin.

Next I attempted to design a far simpler skin. I thought there was not enough tiger print in my life so I started work on Tiger skin trousers. This was a much simpler skin to redesign as the diffuse map was a lot more simple.

And so this was my attempt at creating skins in game for Rust. I'd love to dabble in creating assets for other games in the future as part of my graphic design portfolio, however we will see if anything ever peaks my interest.
